Energy-Saving “Hacks” for a Cosy and Efficient Home in 2023

Welcome to Bind, where we’re about to help you take your home to the next level of warmth, cosiness, and energy efficiency! We share our top five energy-saving tips for 2023. Not only will these tips save you money, but they’ll also make you a planet-saving superstar – So, let’s jump right in!

The Great British Insulation Scheme

The Great British Insulation Scheme (previously ECO+) is an exciting initiative that is currently being finalised and is set to launch this summer 2023 through all participating energy suppliers. This scheme aims to help thousands of people across the UK better insulate their homes. Proper insulation is key to keeping your home warm and reducing heat loss. By taking advantage of this upcoming scheme, you can improve your home’s energy efficiency and reduce your carbon footprint.

Upgrade to Energy-Efficient Lighting

One of the easiest ways to save energy and reduce your electricity bills is by upgrading to energy-efficient lighting. Replace traditional incandescent bulbs with energy-saving LED or CFL bulbs.

These bulbs not only use less energy but also have a longer lifespan. Consider installing motion sensor lights in areas where they are needed temporarily, such as hallways or garages, to avoid unnecessary energy consumption.

Mindful Thermostat Usage

Invest in a smart thermostat that allows you to schedule temperature adjustments throughout the day. Set lower temperatures when you’re away or asleep and raise them when you’re at home and active. This simple adjustment can significantly reduce your energy consumption without compromising your comfort.

Curious about upgrading to a smart thermostat? Explore our Smart Thermostat installation service to enhance control and energy efficiency in your home

Unplug and Switch Off

Did you know that electronic devices on standby mode still consume energy – roughly 40% of a device’s total energy use? Unplug chargers, power strips, and appliances when not in use to eliminate the “vampire” energy drain. Also, remember to switch off lights when leaving a room. Small habits like these can have a big impact on your energy consumption.

Maintain Your Heating System

Regular maintenance of your heating system is essential for optimum efficiency. Schedule an annual boiler service with our experienced technicians to ensure your boiler is running smoothly.

Another effective way to improve the efficiency of your heating system is by turning down the boiler flow temperature. By reducing the temperature at which hot water is circulated throughout your home, you can save energy and lower your heating costs.

To learn more about the benefits of turning down your boiler flow temperature and other helpful tips for maintaining your heating system, check out our detailed blog post on this topic.

Schedule your Annual Check-Up today to keep your heating system in top shape and learn more about the potential for a new boiler replacement.

Small changes can make a big difference. Start your journey towards a more energy-efficient future today!

By following these energy-saving tips, you can create a warm and efficient home while reducing your carbon footprint. Take advantage of The Great British Insulation Scheme to improve your home’s insulation, upgrade to energy-efficient lighting, optimise your thermostat usage, unplug and switch off devices, and maintain your heating system.

Electric Boilers Vs. Gas Boilers: Making The Right Choice for Your Home

Boilers, the unsung heroes of cosiness and comfort! They work tirelessly behind the scenes, keeping our homes warm and our water hot, like magical warmth wizards. But when it comes to choosing the perfect boiler, we’ve got a face-off between two contenders: electric and gas. They both bring their unique features to the table, but as with anything, there are a few downsides too. So let’s compare them briefly to help you understand a bit more about them.

Electric Boilers: Efficiency and Eco-Friendliness Combined

Let’s start with electric boilers…One of their standout features is their impressive efficiency, meaning they can produce the same amount of heat while consuming less energy compared to their gas counterparts. Electric hot water boilers

This not only translates to cost savings on your energy bills but also reduces your carbon footprint, making electric boilers a greener choice. Plus, these boilers don’t emit any harmful gases, making them an eco-friendly option for those who prioritise sustainability. On top of that, electric boilers are a breeze to install, as they don’t require a flue or chimney. And, their quiet operation, ensures a peaceful home environment. Electric hot water boilers also offer an excellent choice for flats, providing a multitude of advantages compared to the installation of gas, oil, or LPG boilers, particularly in cases where electricity is the only available primary energy source.

However, it’s important to consider a few downsides of electric boilers. To start, they can be costlier to run than gas boilers, so it’s worth factoring in the electric boiler cost and electricity prices when making a decision. Although electric combi boilers are more expensive to run than gas boilers, they’re much more efficient.

Additionally, electric boilers may not be suitable for larger homes or those with high heating and hot water demands, as they may not pack the same power punch as gas boilers. Lastly, compatibility with renewable energy systems might be limited, so if you have plans for a sustainable energy setup, it’s essential to double-check whether an electric boiler installation aligns with your goals.

Gas Boilers: Power and Affordability in One Package

Now, let’s turn our attention to the ever-popular gas boilers. These boilers are known for their robust heating capabilities, making them a go-to choice for larger homes or households with higher heating and hot water requirements. New gas boilers are also compatible with most renewable energy systems, allowing you to harness the benefits of sustainable power sources alongside their performance. Another advantage of gas boilers is their affordability when it comes to day-to-day running costs, potentially offering long-term savings on your energy bills.

However, there are a few factors to consider before committing to a gas boiler. Despite their power, gas boilers tend to be less energy efficient than their electric counterparts, which means they consume more energy to generate the same amount of heat. This can impact both your wallet and the environment, as the extra energy usage contributes to air pollution and climate change. Additionally, gas boilers require a flue or chimney for installation, which adds some complexity to the process. Lastly, gas boilers can be a bit noisier compared to their electric counterparts, so if a quiet atmosphere is high on your priority list, it’s something to keep in mind.

Finding Your Perfect Match – Bind Can Help!

Choosing the right boiler ultimately comes down to your unique circumstances and preferences. If you value efficiency and eco-friendliness, an electric boiler could be an excellent fit for your home. On the other hand, if you prioritise affordability and power, a new gas boiler might be the way to go.

Both electric and gas combi boiler prices fitted can vary depending on the type of boiler and the size of your home, so it’s important to compare prices before making a decision. – Get a Boiler Installation Quote from Bind today!

Embracing the Future: The Evolution of Boilers

It’s worth mentioning that the government has taken significant steps toward phasing out gas boilers in new build homes starting in 2025. With a commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2050, gas boilers’ contribution to air pollution and climate change is being addressed. While the fate of existing gas boilers remains uncertain, incentives will likely be introduced to encourage homeowners to replace their current systems with more efficient and environmentally friendly alternatives.

If you’re in the market for a new boiler, considering the future landscape of boiler technology is prudent. Opting for a boiler that aligns with the government’s plans can save you from potential headaches down the line and ensure your home remains compatible with evolving standards.

Discover the Magic of LPG Boilers: Energy-Efficient and Eco-Friendly

We’re about to dive into the world of LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) boilers, a fuel that’s as versatile as a chameleon with a jetpack – from keeping our homes roaring with LPG central heating to powering those steamy showers, LPG knows how to do it all, so, let’s uncover the ins and outs of LPG boilers.

Bind are committed to ensuring that you have access to the information you need to make informed decisions when it comes to your heating needs.

LPG Boilers: Overview

With approximately 4 million homes in the UK not connected to the natural gas network, many rely on alternative heating sources like oil boilers.  LPG boilers offer certain advantages over other fossil fuel options, such as lower upfront costs and reduced carbon emissions.

LPG boilers operate similarly to natural gas or oil boilers, burning fuel to generate heat and water heating. However, since LPG is not supplied through a mains network, it needs to be stored in tanks and delivered to your home. To use an LPG boiler, you will require a suitable boiler, a storage tank, and an LPG supplier. Typically, the tank is kept outdoors and can be rented from the supplier. While LPG may have higher costs compared to oil, it is a more efficient fuel, potentially resulting in long-term bill reductions.

Pros of LPG Boilers:

LPG boilers offer several advantages worth considering.

Firstly, their upfront costs are generally lower than oil boilers, with prices starting at roughly £400. In fact, LPG boilers can be over 50% cheaper than natural gas boilers.

Another benefit is their reduced carbon emissions. LPG boilers produce about 35% less CO2 than coal and 12% less than oil.

Additionally, if you’re replacing an old, inefficient boiler, LPG boilers are a viable option. They boast an average efficiency rating of around 90%, meaning minimal wastage and cost savings. Furthermore, their compact size makes them ideal for smaller spaces, such as park homes or smaller houses. Lastly, LPG boilers are widely available from trusted manufacturers, offering a wide range of options to suit your needs.

Cons of LPG Boilers:

Despite the advantages, there are some considerations to bear in mind.

One drawback is the higher fuel costs compared to natural gas. LPG delivery can also pose challenges, requiring regular monitoring to avoid running low on fuel and potentially being left without heat and hot water.

Furthermore, the need for a storage tank adds an additional cost, either as an upfront purchase or a monthly rental fee. This is an aspect that differs from other fuel types.

In terms of boiler types, LPG boilers include heat-only boilers, LPG system boilers, and LPG combi boilers, providing domestic hot water (DHW) heating. Notably, leading boiler manufacturers like Worcester Bosch, Baxi, Glow Worm, Ideal Logic, Potterton, Vaillant, Vokera, and more offer a choice of LPG boiler options.

Is LPG the Right Choice for Your Heating Needs?

LPG boilers present an excellent choice for individuals seeking an efficient, compact, and affordable heating solution for their central heating systems, especially when natural gas is not available.

The lower upfront costs, reduced carbon emissions, high efficiency, and wide availability make LPG boilers a practical option. However, it’s essential to consider the ongoing fuel costs, potential delivery challenges, and the need for a storage tank. At Bind, we are here to assist you in finding the right heating solution for your home

Our team of skilled LPG engineers is available to assist you in determining whether an LPG boiler is suitable for your home. With a seamless LPG boiler installation, we can ensure reliable heating and hot water solutions to meet your needs.

Is Your Boiler Trying to Tell You Something? Discover the Importance of Annual Boiler Servicing

We all rely on our trusty boilers to keep us warm and provide much-needed hot water. After all, who wants to endure a chilly home or a sudden cold shower? But here’s the thing: boilers, like any other mechanical equipment, need a little TLC to keep them from throwing a temper tantrum and leaving us shivering.

It’s as simple as this: show your boiler some love and attention, and it’ll reward you with cosy warmth and hot water all year round. Think of it as a little investment in comfort and peace of mind.

With Bind, boiler maintenance becomes a breeze, ensuring your boiler is as happy as can be, and keeping those cosy vibes flowing! So, let’s dive into the world of boiler servicing and walk you through the ins and outs of a typical service to keep things ticking over nicely!

What is a Boiler Service?

A boiler service is a thorough inspection and cleaning of your boiler system, which should be carried out annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer. The purpose of a boiler service is to ensure your boiler is working correctly and safely, identify any potential faults, and prevent breakdowns.

A typical boiler service involves inspecting the key components of your boiler, such as the heat exchanger, flue, burner, and controls. Your engineer will also clean the boiler and check for signs of wear and tear.

Bind is Gas Safe Registered, so you can rest assured that our team of expert engineers are fully qualified to carry out a full boiler service or boiler repairs.

Why is a Boiler Service Important?

A regular boiler service is essential to ensure your boiler is safe, efficient, and reliable. Here are some of the key benefits of a boiler service:

  • Improved Efficiency: A boiler that is regularly serviced will be more efficient and use less fuel, saving you money on your energy bills.
  • Enhanced Safety: A boiler service will identify any potential safety issues, such as gas leaks or carbon monoxide leaks, and rectify them promptly.
  • Reduced Risk of Breakdowns: A boiler service can identify any faults before they develop into more significant problems, reducing the risk of breakdowns.
  • Extended Lifespan: Regular servicing can extend the lifespan of your boiler, saving you money on costly replacements.

What Happens During a Boiler Service?

A boiler service involves a thorough inspection of your boiler to ensure that it is working correctly and safely. At Bind, our experienced engineers perform a range of checks to ensure that your boiler is operating at maximum efficiency, with minimum risk of faults or breakdowns.

Here are the main inspection points we undertake when servicing a combi boiler (system boilers require a few more checks):

  • Visual Inspection of the Boiler

Our engineers will visually inspect your boiler to identify any signs of wear or damage. This includes checking for leaks, corrosion, or any other issues that may cause your boiler to fail.

  • Flue Gas Analysis & Efficiency Test

We perform a flue gas analysis and efficiency test to ensure your boiler is running as efficiently as possible. This test involves measuring the levels of gases produced by your boiler and comparing them to expected levels. If the levels are outside the recommended range, we will investigate further to identify the issue and provide a solution.

  • Checking and Adjusting System Pressure

The system pressure in your boiler can impact its performance and efficiency. Our engineers will check and adjust the system pressure to ensure it is within the recommended range.

  • Cleaning and Clearing the Condensate Trap

The condensate trap is an essential component of your boiler that collects and removes condensation from the system. Over time, it can become blocked, which can lead to a range of issues, including leaks and reduced efficiency. We will clean and clear the trap to prevent these issues from occurring.

  • Checking Boiler Safety

Our engineers will check that your boiler is firing up and shutting down safely and correctly. We also ensure that the ventilation and flue are per the manufacturer’s instructions.

  • Gas Tightness Test

We perform a gas tightness test to ensure that there are no gas leaks in your system. This test is essential for ensuring the safety of your boiler and your property.

  • Confirmation and Paperwork

After we have completed the service, we will issue paperwork to confirm that the service has been carried out. This paperwork is essential for warranty and insurance purposes.

What You Talking About!

Why we insist on a Magna clean filter:

Think of it as a pacemaker for your system………. apart from its nothing like a pacemaker. in fact, It doesn’t have anything to do with keeping pace, and it’s nowhere near as scary.

The hot water circulating through your heating system picks up bits of debris (or magnetite) which can eventually build up in the system. In turn, this moves it all the way through your system and boiler, resulting in cold spots on your radiators, debris reducing the size of the pipework and can cause damage to your heat exchange in the boiler.

A MagnaClean attracts all these bits of debris with a magnet as the water flows through it, preventing a build-up of sludge in the heating system and can be cleaned and collected away safely, reducing the cause of damage to your boiler and heating system.
